 Magic Squares

 What You Need:

• Paper
• Pencil or pen
• Your brain

Instructions:

1. Draw 2 lines going horizontal and 2 lines going vertical to make what looks like a tic tac toe board.
2. Then, use your brain to remember your addition facts.
3. Fill in each square with numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,or 9. You can only use each number once.
4. Then add each column, row, and diagonal and they should each equal 15.
5. If they equal something else, keep trying.
6. When you get it right, reward yourself with something.
7. Tell your parents about the magic squares and challenge them.

Mind Reading

What You Need:

• An accomplice (a friend who knows the secret)
• Chewing gum

Instructions:

1. Tell your friends that you can read the mind of your accomplice.
2. Ask someone to whisper a number from 1 to 10 in your accomplice’s ear.
3. Put your hands on your accomplice’s cheeks. (Act like you are reading his mind)
4. Your accomplice should chew his gum the same number of times as the number that was whispered in his ear.
5. You will amazingly know what number was whispered in your accomplice’s ear!

I Know Your Number

What You Need:

• A sheet of blank paper, folded into thirds
• 3 pencils
• 3 friends

Instructions:

1. Tear the paper neatly along the folds so that you have three sheets of equal size. The smaller sheets may seem identical, but actually the center sheet is ragged on two sides, while the end sheets are ragged only on one side. No one will notice this, but you will see it is an important difference, which will help you succeed with this trick!
2. Hand the center sheet and a pencil to someone in your audience. Ask them to write any number and to fold the sheet into thirds. Tell the participant to concentrate on their number.
3. Hand the remaining sheets and pencils to two other audience members. Ask them to write numbers and to fold the sheets into thirds.
4. Collect the papers and scramble them.
5. Pull out the first volunteers sheet. You’ll know it’s theirs because it’s the only sheet with two ragged edges. Hold up the sheet and ask the volunteer if it is their number, and they will be amazed that you picked the right one!

Guess the Number

What You Need:

• Paper
• Pencil

Instructions:

1. Write a number on a piece of paper equal to the current year times two. (example: 1999 x 2 =3998).
2. Fold the paper and put it in your pocket.
3. Give your friend a piece of paper and a pencil.
4. Tell your friend to write down the following:
   A. The year he was born
   B. The year he started school
   C. How old he will be at the end of this year
   D. The number of years he has been in school by the end of this year.

Make sure he doesn’ t tell you any of these numbers!

1. Tell your friend to add up all of his numbers.
2. Now, take out the piece of paper in your pocket and amaze your friend by showing him the same number he just wrote!

If you are using this trick for your parents, or someone finished with school, you will have to change the questions to the following:
A. The year he was born
B. The year he graduated high school
C. How old he will be at the end of this year
D. The number of years since graduation, by the end of this year.

What You Need:

• A friend

Instructions:

1. Ask a friend to pick a number.
2. Add the next higher number to it.
3. Add 9 and divide by 2, and then subtract the original number.
4. Is it 5?
